Snowed Under review

A two-to-four-hour Chilla's Art story that is also a snow-shoveling job. Mixed for a reason.

Snowed Under released on Steam on 13 August 2026 (Japanese coverage often says the 14th). It is a single-player first-person horror from Chilla’s Art, the studio behind The Convenience Store and a long line of short J-horror experiments. Price at launch sat around a $7.99 list with a short intro discount. Reviews opened Mixed, roughly half recommending it.

This hub stays as spoiler-light as a review can. Specs: system requirements. Stutters, snow filter, and crashes: performance. Buy or wait: Should You Buy. How to play after you buy: Getting Started.

What the game is

You shovel snow toward a steel radio tower, upgrade a shovel with scrap, visit buried buildings, and talk to Kai. Estimated time is two to four hours. Full audio is Japanese; many other languages have UI and subtitles. It runs on Unreal Engine for Windows. There is no second human in the snow.

If you liked Chilla’s Art when the hook was a workplace or a train car, this hook is a winter chore. That is clever on paper. Execution is where Steam split.

Why people recommend it

  • The first tunnels feel smothering. Digging a hole to walk through is a rare horror toy.
  • Interiors can look genuinely wrong before you realize some rooms are empty.
  • Kai’s relationship writing landed for some fans, including praise for a specific kind of messy attachment.
  • Optimization was called light compared with older heavy Chilla’s Art builds. Game*Spark relayed the studio saying it should run for almost anyone.
  • Full voice work on the lead was called a plus in otherwise negative reviews.
  • If you like the shovel itself, the upgrade curve becomes satisfying, which a Japanese player admitted even while calling it not very scary.

Why people do not

  • Ninety percent shovel, ten percent scare. Multiple English reviews called it a snow simulator wearing a horror jacket.
  • Late shovel upgrades flatten the tunnels into an open, low-detail field with flare lighting.
  • Wolves are slow, sometimes silent, sometimes stuck, and death barely matters.
  • Interiors tease atmosphere then pay scrap.
  • Snow particles nauseate. Night lighting hurts eyes.
  • Story and ending felt thin or forced next to older titles like The Bathhouse or The Closing Shift.
  • Freezes, Day 2 clock stalls, Day 3 photo tool loss. See known bugs.
  • AI was used in pre-production for concepts and blockouts. Final assets are claimed human. Some buyers still bounced on the disclosure.

Who should buy it

Buy it if you want a short Chilla’s Art experiment, you can enjoy a repetitive physical verb, and you will save often. Wait or skip if you need constant scares, deep puzzles, or a map that never asks you to jump to see a roof. Wishlist history from UMIGARI is not a guarantee; several fans called this their least favorite.
