Snowed Under Kai's shelter

The only honest safe room. Treat every dump as a save point.

Base Camp

Base camp is the buried room with a fire, storage, and Kai. Store copy calls Kai your friend and says conversations unfold as days pass. A Japanese review described chopping wood for a stranded companion who cannot move. This is not a multiplayer lobby. Snowed Under is single-player; Kai is an NPC.

Everything you earn on the mountain is wasted if you do not bank it here. Read this with Getting Started and scrap and upgrades. Geography outward is landmarks.

What to do every return

  1. Dump scrap and cans.
  2. Buy the next planned upgrade (upgrade planner).
  3. Eat if stamina is gone (food and supplies).
  4. Talk to Kai if a prompt exists. Skipping talks is how story flags thin out before endings.
  5. Feed the fire if wood is part of the day.
  6. Save. Then leave.

A Friendly Face is “Meet the NPC.” If that has not popped, you have not finished onboarding at camp.

Photo, bag, and freeze events

A Steam thread describes a Day 3 beat: the main room is empty, a photo peeks from a bag, and after viewing it the tools disappear. Reloading returns you to just before the photo. Another player waited a long time for night, then touched the backpack without saving and froze with audio still playing.

Camp rule for later days: duplicate your save mindset. Save, trigger the object, if tools vanish or the client locks, stop overwriting the good file. Full notes: known bugs. Patch 1.06 touched achievement triggers, not necessarily this event.

Why the hub location matters for digging

Snow hardness scales with distance from this fire according to players. Farm the ring. Do not treat camp as a fast-travel you can ignore for an hour. The mountain will tax you.

If you get lost, camp is the origin of every spoke. Leave a tunnel wall pointing at it. When Fully Equipped erases walls, use the bus and tower silhouettes instead.

Tone at home

Reviews split on Kai. Some found the relationship the only sharp writing. Some found the lead oblivious and the ending forced. You still have to come home. The loop is shovel, dump, talk. If you only shovel, you will hit the tower with a hollow script and then post “how do I get Ending B.”

For night safety, do not linger outside when you could be at this fire. Lost to the Cold is an outdoor death. Wolves are mostly a building problem. Camp is where How to Survive wants you when the filter becomes a medical issue.

When you are ready to leave for good, the path is the steel tower, not a new hub.

Camp is also where you should stop if the snow filter is wrecking your eyes. Reviews that mention nausea are describing outdoor time. The fire room is dimmer, slower, and safer for a break. Use that pause to dump, save, and decide whether the next trip is loot, story, or bed. A planner that never lets you sit down is how Day 3 freezes happen. Treat the shelter as a checkpoint in a roguelike even though the mountain is a linear horror chore.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Is Kai another player?

No. Kai is an NPC companion at the shelter. The game is single-player.

Should I save at camp every time?

Yes. Freezes and a weak autosave are launch complaints. Dump, talk, save.

What is the Day 3 photo bug?

A reported event where viewing a photo from a bag can remove tools and loop the save. See known bugs.

Do I have to talk to Kai?

If you want story endings, yes. Silent mining skips flags people later need for Ending B.
